Evelyn Strand (Kennicott) Morgan died peacefully on Sunday, October 8, 2017, at the Green House Living facility in Sheridan, Wyoming. She was 102 years old.
Evelyn was born on February 28, 1915, in Red Deer, Nebraska to Paul and Mabelle Kennicott. She was the oldest of three children, with one sister, Kathleen, and a brother, Jack. Her father was a well driller and cattle rancher, and Evelyn grew up in the rural sand hills of northern Nebraska.
She graduated from high school in Wood Lake, Nebraska, in 1933.
Evelyn then moved with her family to Wyoming where she met her future husband, Leslie Morgan, near Gillette, Wyoming, where his family had a cattle ranching operation. They were married on Dec. 28, 1938, in Custer, South Dakota.
She studied Wyoming High School Normal training (teaching) at Gillette and graduated in 1939.
The couple then moved to Otter, MT, where they ranched on Otter Creek for many years. Evelyn and Leslie had five children—Wayne, June, Phillip, Cindy, and Stanley. The couple eventually retired to their home in Sheridan, Wyoming, where Leslie died in 1990. Family members continued the ranching operation.
Evelyn enjoyed the ranch life for many years, her cats, vegetable cultivation, and flower gardening. She especially loved African Violets and was active in the Sheridan African Violet Club for many years. Evelyn was an excellent cook and many enjoyed her signature dishes—particularly cinnamon rolls and pies of all kinds. Other interests at which she excelled included knitting, sewing, quilting, and canning. She attended church throughout her life, including the Trinity Lutheran church in later years. Evelyn is remembered by all who knew her for her kind heart and gentle nature.
Evelyn was preceded in death by her husband, Leslie Morgan, and two sons, Wayne Morgan and Stanley Morgan. She is survived by a son, Phillip Morgan and daughter-in-law Katie Morgan of Laramie; a daughter, June Snook and son-in-law Neil Snook of Saline, Michigan; and a daughter, Cindy Ross, of Sheridan. Evelyn had four grandchildren—Travis Ross of Chicago, Illinois; Tyler Snook of Reno, Nevada; Ryan Snook of Grand Ledge, Michigan; and Sarah Morgan of Denver, Colorado. Evelyn also is survived by four great-grandchildren—Ruby and Wes Snook of Reno, Nevada, and Kaitlyn and Ben Snook of Grand Ledge, Michigan.
A private memorial is planned at a later date with ashes to be interred next to her husband at the family plot in Gillette, Wyoming. Online condolences may be written at www.championfh.com.
