LARAMIE, Wyo. (AP) — Joe Legerski is retiring as Wyoming women’s basketball coach, ending a 16-year run with the Cowgirls.

The athletic department announced the decision Wednesday.

The 61-year-old Legerski steps downs as the winningest coach in program history, going 314-186. He led the Cowgirls to the 2007 Women’s National Invitation Tournament championship and the school’s only NCAA Tournament appearance the following year.

Legerski released a statement on the team’s Twitter account, saying: “It is nice to be able to make this choice at this time in my life. I am truly indebted to the administration, support staff, coaches and players that made Cowgirl basketball such a success.”

The Cowgirls advanced to the Mountain West Conference Tournament championship game this year, losing to Boise State, then advanced to the WNIT quarterfinals. They finished the season 25-9, going 13-3 in the Mountain West regular season.
