Vern Gilbert, 87 year old Kaycee resident passed away Thursday afternoon at his home in Kaycee. Private interment will be held by his family and friends.  

Vernon Waldo Gilbert was born on February 13, 1929 in Gillette, Wyoming to Matthew and Sarah Atteberry Gilbert.  He grew up and received his education in Gillette.  He joined the U.S. Army after high school and served state side during the Korean Conflict.  Following an honorable discharge Vern returned to Wyoming where he and his brother Bob were fence builders for various ranches in Johnson and Campbell Counties. 

He owned the Husky Service Station in Buffalo for a time before going to work in the oil patch for Neal Stafford.  He took a job with the Kaycee Oil Field Service in 1979 where he worked until 1999.  He was married to Barbara Allen on May 2, 1998 in Kaycee and they made their home in Kaycee.  Vern went to work for L and L Oil Field Service as a vac truck driver and in 2009 he went to work for Jim Ullery driving a belly dump.  In 2012 he finally retired, at the age of 83, and continued living in Kaycee until his death.

He is survived by his wife Barbara Allen-Gilbert of Kaycee and a host of friends.
