UPDATE (7:35 PM) SHERIDAN, WY— Firefighters on the Lick Creek fire encountered challenging conditions on Wednesday.

The fire held to its current size of four acres but two firefighters suffered injuries. One had a heat-related illness and another had an eye injury.

Part of the fire is in a steep canyon and inaccessible to firefighters.

Additional firefighters arrived from the Wind River Agency.

Containment is at 0% but a saw line was completed.


UPDATE (1:48 PM): SHERIDAN, WY — On the evening of July 30th, firefighters were looking for two reported fires in the northern portion of the Bighorn National Forest. It was determined that there is likely only one fire, named the Lick Creek fire.

This fire is located approximately one mile down Forest Trail 076, accessed by Forest Road 147, off of the Dayton Gulch Road (Forest Road 15). It is described as Township 56N, R 90 W, Section 9.

It is currently four acres in size, burning in heavy timber fuels. Approximately 15 firefighters using All Terrain Vehicles and one helicopter from the Wyoming State Forestry arrived on the fire this morning to begin suppression actions of fireline construction and water drops. An additional 10 firefighters have been ordered to help secure the fire.

Weather will remain hot and dry, and while the fire danger indices are currently Moderate, the fire has the potential to grow with passing thunderstorm winds that could hit the fire.

The public should remain out of the fire area. Forest Road 147 and Trail 076 have been temporarily closed, with an exception for the public to remove any trailers that may be down FR 147.

SHERIDAN, WY— Two wildfires were reportedly burning on the Bighorn National Forest on Tuesday evening.

According to officials from the U.S. Forest Service (USFS), Bighorn National Forest engine crews were dispatched to two separate incidents on the forest.

One fire was reported to be in the Bucking Mule Falls area on the Medicine Wheel Ranger District, and the other was located between Lick and Lake Creeks north of Forest Service Road 15 on the Tongue Ranger District.

The USFS said that as of Wednesday morning, size up of the fires was being conducted. Crews continue to assess what was reported and if there is possibly another fire.

Aircraft have been ordered to the Bighorns to assist with locating the fires and fire suppression efforts.

No information as to the cause of the fires was released. Big Horn Mountain Radio Network will continue following this story for future updates.
