Richard “Dick” Summers, 81, passed away peacefully on Friday, December 21, 2018 at Legacy Living and Rehabilitation Center in Gillette, WY. He is proceeded in death by his parents Robert and Jessie Summers, Sister Betty Gooch, infant brother, and his loving wife of 45 years, Sharon Ann Summers. Dick was a long-time Sheridan resident. He was born and raised in Sweetwater, TX and went to Sweetwater High School where he was a star scholar athlete in multiple sports. He then attended and studied engineering at the University of Texas before joining the Army. He was a Specialist in the US Army based in Ft. Bliss, TX from 1961-1963. He was honorably discharged and received a Good Conduct Medal and was an Expert (Carbine) and Marksman (Rifle). While stationed at Ft. Bliss he met Sharon Ann Sisk and they were married shortly thereafter in Los Cruces, NM on December 26, 1961. After being discharged from the Army he and Sharon moved to Wyoming where Dick was a contract land surveyor for the oil and uranium companies. He and Sharon lived in a number of communities until they settled in Sheridan with their children. Dick continued to survey until he and long-time business partner, Willis Fauth, purchased Interstate Oil Company. After they sold the business some years later, Dick took some time off to spend with family and travel with Sharon. He then went back to work for Torrington Livestock Commission and was a respected cattle buyer in both Wyoming and Montana. He semi-retired and went to work on the construction of the Powder Horn Golf Community and later was the weed spraying “Guru”.
Dick had many loyal friends and was always considered fair and was one of the kindest, nicest men you would ever meet. Unfortunately, in the past year dementia and COPD finally took its toll and he was no longer able to live alone and moved into Legacy Living to be better cared for.
Dick was a long-time member of Elks Lodge #520 and he loved to fish, hunt, and play golf with his many friends. He is survived by his children: Suzanne (Pete) Schaneman of Gillette, WY, Sam (Hillary) Summers of Hewitt, TX. His granddaughters Jessie Gillum and Jamie Gillum both of Gillette, WY and his little buddy great granddaughter, Jaelynn White.
A private graveside service will be held with family at the Elks Cemetery. A celebration of Dick’s Life will be held on Saturday, December 29th at 2:00p.m. at the Little Goose Room at the Best Western Sheridan Center.
