Laura Meade, 101, of Sheridan passed away peacefully on August 9, 2017 at the Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County.  She was born on September 28, 1915 to Ray and Florence Palmer in Hetland, South Dakota (current population 46).  She married the love of her life, Clyde Wake, and raised their two children, Carl and Susan (Gladys) in New Castle, Wyoming.

In 1951 she moved to Sheridan, Wyoming and found love again when she later married Fred Meade.  Thanks to Fred, she discovered a new interest in fishing and outdoor life while continuing her career with AT&T as a telephone operator.  Laura worked for 30 years with AT&T with perfect attendance her last 10 years – she was passionate about her work, she loved her colleagues, she loved serving people!  Upon retirement, she volunteered at Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County for 20 years where she continued to show her love for people.

Laura never met a stranger.  She gave selflessly and freely; putting others’ desires before her own.  She took great pleasure in spreading happiness and goodwill.  Everyone felt special around her.   She was a true grandma to her 6 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren, and 17 great, great, grandchildren – lavishing attention and all the candy they could eat with their Pepsis!  The highlight of many days was finishing the day with a “cone with a curl on top!”   Laura’s love for life was contagious!  She overcame challenges without holding grudges or finding fault.  She was often heard saying, “We’re not going to let ‘this’ bother us!”  In a word, Laura’s life was love – she loved God, she loved family, she loved friends, she loved life!

Laura was preceded in death by her first husband, Clyde Wake, second husband, Fred Meade and her son, Carl Wake.   She is survived by her daughter, Susan (Gladys) Huntley.
