Donald Gene Huffaker was born September 7, 1927 in Kansas City, Missouri, the only child of CR and Grace “Lulu” (Cooley) Huffaker. He passed away Monday, March 5, 2018 at Westview Health Care Center. They moved to Sheridan in the 30’s and Don attended local schools, graduating from Sheridan High School in 1945.
In his early years in Sheridan, Don worked at KWYO and was an avid ham radio operator. In 1950 the United States Army was in need of radio engineers and Don brought his expertise to serve our country in Korea.
After Don returned to Sheridan in 1952 he opened G & H Electronics, which operated in the back of the Davis Music building. He ran that business with the assistance of his mother.
Don was a man of many interests. He was an avid outdoorsman and loved the Big Horns. Don enjoyed elk hunting, fishing, hiking and skiing, with an August Pack Trip in the Red Grade area being a highlight each year. Don was an avid bowler and sponsored the G & H Electric Bowling Team. He loved music and served many years on the Sheridan Arts Council. He was recently named an emeritus member of the board.
Don was instrumental in founding the Little Bear Ski Club and Montcrief Hill ski area. Don was an initial stock holder in Fun Valley Inc., which built Antelope Butte Ski Area, and then served on the founding Board of Directors. He also served many years on the Ski Patrol for Antelope Butte.
Don enjoyed golfing at Kendrick Gold Course and shared many rounds with good friends there.
Don is survived by cousins and second cousins Dennis Cooley, Jim Cooley, Tom Cooley, Rich Cooley, Pam Potter, Vicki Neppl, Janet Dowling, Janice Huisenga, Steve Long and Kara Sherman.
Don also leaves behind many great friends, among them Parke Davis, John Day, Bob Duncan, Dick Mumma, Rich and Kathy Urbatchka, Harlan Rasmussen, and many others.
Funeral service will be held Monday, March 19th at 11:00 a.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church, with Pastor Phil Wold presiding. Memorials suggested to the Antelope Butte Foundation.
