Johnson County employees have been alerted to a widespread “sextortion hoax/scam” that is targeting multiple state, local, tribal, and territorial (SLTT) governments.

The scam emails include a password protected PDF with a fraudulent narrative designed to socially engineer recipients into believing they were recorded viewing online pornography.

The actors threaten to release the video to all the recipient’s contacts unless a ransom is paid.

This most recent campaign mirrors previous sextortion scams, differing only with the addition of a password protect PDF.

These sextortion emails typically include usernames and passwords currently or formally associated with the recipient.

Falling victim to this scam will result in the loss of monetary assets or other financial information.
