PRESS RELEASE
SHERIDAN, WY— Recent changes to post and pole harvesting on the Bighorn National Forest have been made. Post and pole (live, dead, and teepee) cutting is now open forest wide on the Bighorn National Forest unless otherwise designated as no cutting areas. No cutting areas include Cloud Peak Wilderness, active timber sales, research natural areas, administrative sites (including recreation residences, campgrounds, picnic areas, recreation sites, resort areas, or any area closed to cutting forest products).
Harvesting posts and poles still requires a permit. The permits will be available after July 1, 2019. With this permit, you may cut material seven inches or less in diameter measured at 12 inches from the ground. There is no maximum length per piece. The permits are sold for $9 each with a minimum purchase of three for a total of $27. Each permit is good for 20 posts or poles.
A permit is required for cutting a set of teepee poles for family ceremonial use. One permit will be issued per family upon request at no charge. Maps and information will be provided with your permit.
