Abel “Poncho” Vigil, 89, of Sheridan, passed away on Monday, July 8, 2019, at Sheridan Memorial Hospital. He was born on June 5, 1930 in Wagon Mound, New Mexico to parents Santiago and Epifania (Thomas) Vigil. He attended school in Wagon Mound and later came to Wyoming with a load of steers for the Tschirgi Antler Ranch in Wyola, MT. He married Josephine Guerrero on December 5, 1953. He worked for Kendrick Cattle Company at the OW Ranch, the Yonkee Ranch in Pass Creek, WY, the Padlock Ranch in Crow Agency, the Stevens Ranch in Otter, MT and later the PK Ranch in Sheridan, WY.
Abel was a true cowboy and enjoyed ranch work, fencing, haying, playing cards, playing billiards, fishing, horseback riding in the mountains and spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of the Eagles #186.
Abel was preceded in death by wife, Josephine (Guerrero)Vigil, daughter, Bernadette Shafer, sisters Sinforosa (Vigil) Maes, Theodora Dora (Vigil) Garcia, Theodora Vigil (infant), brothers, Juan Andres John Vigil, Fedencio Fred Vigil, Aaron Vigil, parents Santiago and Epifania Vigil. He is survived by his children, Ernie (Nancy) Vigil of Portland, Or, Jennifer Vigil of White Fish, MT, Steve (Linda) Vigil of North Las Vegas, NV, Barbara (Gary) Crump of Fruita, CO, Ramon (Kate) Vigil of Sheridan, WY, 18 grandchildren,32 great-grandchildren,2 great-great grandchildren, siblings, Raymond Vigil of Cheyenne, WY and Margarita Abeyta of Santa Fe, NM.
